We will ride to Mzimhlophe and visit the only former women’s hostel as a separate area. We continue to Mama Lillian Mgoyi’s home, an anti-apartheid activist, then cycle to Hector Pietersen Museum where the Soweto uprising transpired which was one of the turning point of apartheid. You will then be introduced to the famous house of Nelson Mandela, where he lived until he was imprisoned for 27 years. We will also show you Arch bishop Desmond Tutu’s house in the popular Vilakazi Street, and talk about his impact in the down fall of Apartheid. Time for LUNCH! Had a great experience with the tour guide. Thoroughly explained everything in detail about how all the places we toured have a significant amount of importance in Johannesburg and gave me a proper authentic experience of Johannesburg.

If you’re looking for an educational and historical overview of Soweto, then the Soweto Walking Tour is a great option. It starts off with a brief history of the township, followed by stops at at attractions including the Hector Pieterson memorial and Nelson Mandela’s house. It also includes an optional extra beer tasting at the Soweto Brewery, and ends with a traditional lunch at Orlando Towers.
Our guide Rambo kept us entertained while educating us on the the township. Highly recommended!
